My Birth Plan, or not, as the case may be

If there’s one thing I learnt during my pregnancies, it is not to plan anything.
Things happen. Plans can lead to disappointment and, as a new mother, this disappointment can really affect your mood and your life.

So Thankfully Boo’s birth plan was relatively short:

I do not want an epidural
I want skin on skin straight after birth and, if I am not able to do it, I want Daddy to do it.
I do not want a caesarean unless it is an emergency.

I have had two high risk pregnancies. My births are not like ‘normal’ people’s. The baby is monitored throughout so I cannot be mobile. I will be basically strapped to the bed for however long it takes with one cannula for insulin in one hand and one for the induction hormone in the other.

I am fine with it. If I get my baby at the end of it, it really is a small price to pay. For this reason though, and my experience last time, I have added a few other things to my birth plan this time.

I do not want an epidural
I want skin on skin straight after birth and, if I am not able to do it, I want Daddy to do,it.
I do not want a caesarean unless it is an emergency.
I was sick after gas and air last time but would like to have another go at it.
Bring on the pethadine at your earliest convenience (best drug ever)
If possible, can I have both cannulas in my left hand

That is basically it. I suppose if I could, I would love to be able to get up. Especially in the actual birth bit itself and I would have liked to have a go on an exercise ball but as long as my baby is born alive, that will be good enough for me.

However with #farmbaby2015 having other ideas, my birth plan could not go even to my small plan.

If it is still breech come 8am on the day I go in for induction, I will be having an epidural and a caesarean.

I hope I will still be able to have skin-to-skin, I am sure they can do that.

It just goes to show you, you can have the best laid plans but babies can have other ideas.

What was your birth plan like? Did your labours go to plan?
