Charging for plastic bags-I agree but have no hope

I am really pleased that the Queen’s speech has announced that supermarkets will have to start charging customers 5p for plastic bags to help reduce waste.
As a society, I do think we rely far too heavily on plastic.
Living on a farm, we are on the receiving end of plastic bag recklessness a lot of them time. People throw them from their car windows and they blow onto our fields and potentially making their way into the mouths of our livestock.

At this point, I would like to say that I keep ‘bags for life’ in my car, ready to whip out and reuse for any impromptu shopping trip. Alas, I cannot.
You see yesterday was a bit ironic.
I decided to tidy my larder cupboard-a procarious ‘jenga’ of cans, packets and jars just waiting patiently to be used.
The bottom of the cupboard was a mess.
Unfortunately I didn’t take a ‘before’ photo but believe me, there were seven. That’s right, SEVEN bags of bags.

Every household must have these. The bags you used at the supermarket and then shoved into another bag when you got home and squeezed into s cupboard or drawer.
You see, most times I visit the shops, I buy a bag for life but they end up just being the host for my other bags and lie, unsused in my cupboard.
I drive into a parking space at my local supermarket and see the big signs ‘don’t forget your bags’ and roll my eyes remembering them lying, lonely in my larder cupboard.

How on earth am I going to remember them?
I have sometimes kept them in my car but still arrived at the check out with no bags.
I am either going to have to remember them or have at least £1 added to every shopping trip.
How do you remember your bags for life?

  1. Here in Wales we have had the plastic bag charge. You see lots of people with their arms absolutely full walking out the shop, having forgotten bags but refusing to pay for one! x

  2. I totally agree yet I’m the same as you! I really want to do it but every time I get to the shops I’ve forgotten to bring my bag for life or forget to get it from the boot of my car before my shop! You’ve reminded me to make more of an effort to remember! 🙂

  3. We have been paying for ours for a good while in Wales and you do get used to it. Just keep all the cotton bags you get at blogging events in the car, when you bring your shopping in hang the bags on the door handle ready for you to take back to the car, that way you never forget them(unless you exit out of a different door).
Like Catriona said you do see people attempting to juggle.
