Autumn Changes on the Farm

Another season and another change on the farm.

The rams have gone off romancing the ladies.

We sent the new Suffolk rams off earlier which I said would be a good idea. Until they had already gone and started and I remembered about a certain #farmbaby2017 being due three weeks before. Oops. They had a lovely time in the shippen before they went having some feed to build them up for the important task ahead.

The other rams went on a week later so that lambing should start a week later which will mean lambing is staggered. I am not sure if that is a good idea or not.

With the rams off gallivanting, the chickens are alone in their field until they come back-alone apart from a naughty dog who is waiting for any opportunity to get in their with them. Put it this way, she doesn’t want to play with them. Vigilance with that one is a must.

I think Boo is missing the rams in the front field, next to the house. She used to go talking to them.

Despite it still technically being autumn, the temperature has plummeted. I’ve had to defrost my car a number of times for the school run already and I am already thinking of ways to keep the animals warm.

The little goats have coats to keep them warm. They were out for a couple of nights in October and I honestly think they got too cold. They didn’t look very happy at all.

A few minutes inside and the perked up but the coats will really help in sub-zero conditions.

Chip, the smaller of the two has had a sore eye. I think she must have got hay dust in there. I started bathing it with cool boiled water but then upgraded to a cold tea bag and some conjunctivitis ointment from the chemist (which I said was for Hubster or they wouldn’t sell it to me). After four days of bathing and squirting cream in, she looks much better and had actually started running away when she sees the tea bag which I am taking as a sure sign that she feels better.

So that’s out Autumn so far on the farm. I am dreaming of more animals but Hubster keeps saying no because of the baby. Spoilsport.
