Celebrity Big Brother-how I fear for my daughter

I am ashamed to say that I watched Celebrity Big Brother last night.

It was on Channel 5 at 9pm-prime time viewing for older children and all I can say is, I am glad that my child is too young to watch it.

Three of the contestants-one man and two women were cavorting in a hot tub/bath and the viewing was tantamount to soft porn.

Now believe me, I am no prude but some things are just wrong.

Is it right that young girls watching it may now think this sort of behavior is ok? Seeing the man egging on the girls to kiss each other and touch each other’s breasts and then looking at the camera with a sinister smile on his face made me very uncomfortable.

The contestants themselves have said on a few occasions that sex sells. The man in the bath in particular spoke of the last time he had a single out in the charts he released a full-frontal, naked photo of himself onto social media and then got to number one.

It is not necessarily their fault. It is the sad fact that we now live in an over-sexualised society where morals are no longer instilled in many young people by their parents and the lines that at one time would never have been crossed have, in many cases, completely eroded.

You see young girls wearing sexually provocative and revealing clothes. Boys believing women are just objects and, scarily, even at primary school, some children are beginning to embark on sexual ‘play.’

Only yesterday, there was a report in the Daily Mail which stated 5000 children under the age of legal consent were diagnosed with sexual infections last year – and some of them were aged as young as 11. (See http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2509780/5-000-children-year-diagnosed-sexually-transmitted-infections-aged-young-ELEVEN.html)

How can we live with ourselves as a society?

Look at the controversy about twerking last year. It has become so overused a phrase now that it is now a source of humour rather than something children should feel ashamed about copying. How many playgrounds in the country now have children fregularly ‘twerking each other?’

We need to be careful. If sex is not taught for the reality that is is-an adult activity, it won’t be long before teachers will have to give students detention for having sex in the middle of the school field. Who knows? This may already be happening.

I am one mum, one person, who is very, very worried about the future for my daughter.

What is the answer?

  1. I think in today’s society the media has a lot to answer for. The Daily Mail themselves are absolutely shocking when it comes to the objectification of women and their bodies. They did an ‘article’ on one of the house mates herself, Luisa on the beach flaunting her body. That is fine, but our children are seeing this as the norm. Sex does sell, and it always has done. It’s only now that the advanced network of vulture-like so-called journalists preoccupied with looks, weight and bodies have the Internet to use as their platform for perpetuating this ‘sex sells’ culture.
I think it is important that we just take responsibility for our children’s education in this way. Have the discussion with them and ask them what they think. Only then can we tell them that it is all top show. Great thought-provoking post xxx

  2. It’s awful. I hate the fact that my girls will be subject to all of this when they are older. Being an ex secondary school teacher, I used to see the what tv and magazines do to young girls. Loss of innocence too soon x
