Cure Cradle Cap in just one week

imageBoo suffered quite badly from cradle cap so I wasn’t surprised to see it on Baby G’s head.

With both babies, I’ve used olive oil (from the chemist-not the infused with garlic from the supermarket) and them rinsed with baby shampoo.

It is a scaly rash which can occur on a baby’s head and has a brown or orange tinge to it. It is harmless but can look unsightly and, to be honest, I wasn’t worried about it at all.

However, last week, I went to the weigh-in clinic to see how much my little bruiser weighs and the health visitor there mentioned his cradle cap and some other dry skin he has on his face.

I told her I had bought some Epiderm cream on the advice of the pharmacist at Boots and, without asking, she wrote me a prescription for another, larger tub of it.

So this is how I got rid of Baby G’s cradle cap in just one week.

Every time I changed his nappy, I massaged Epiderm cream into his head and, at night I rubbed olive oil into his scalp just before Boo’s bedtime story and then bathed Baby G when Boo was asleep.

Here he is with the cream on his head

After every bath, I brushed his scalp with an ordinary, soft bristled baby brush, using a circular motion, dislodging the scales as I went. Then more Epiderm cream was applied.

I have done this for the last week and, even after the first day, I could see a difference.

See how there are patches of clear scalp already? He was trying to grab the phone here πŸ˜‰

I don’t usually bath Baby every day because I don’t think water helps his dry skin but, when I do, I use the Epiderm cream in the water too.

If I see a few scale re-appearing, I just put a bit of cream on him and the Epiderm cream is still applied every night.

Thankfully he still has short hair so it doesn’t matter that it gets in his hair but the cream does absorb well so you can’t even tell after all.

There are many creams like Epiderm. I only choose that one because the lady in Boots showed it to me and it suits G’s skin. I am so impressed with the speed in which his cradle cap has disappeared and even though, I wasn’t overly concerned, it has made me stop making excuses when out and about about him having cradle cap.

  1. Argh.. cradle cap. The oil never worked on my eldest but that’s probably because she had lots of hair when it appeared. We ended up getting cradle cap cream from boots and brushing it out with a good old “nit” comb. Your way sounds so much more gentler for a baby. J was around 18 months when we discovered hers.

  2. Oh I wish I’d read this post a year ago. It took us MONTHS to get rid of cradle cap on Evie & the methods we tried were mush harsher. It’s so frustrating when it just doesn’t go. This is a great post.

  3. Wow I need to try this! My baby has really bad cradle cap but luckily he has long hair. I secretly love picking it out! Haha!

  4. It’s great you have found your cure for boo. We’ve never had CC here so I will keep this is mind whenever I hear of anyone looking for some remedies that actually work πŸ™‚

  5. My baby had a mild case of cradle cap and I have to say the olive oil did work for her as well as a good cream. It is of course harmless unless it starts to itch the baby, but oh so horrible to look at!

  6. Oh this is really helpful, may have a look out for it if baby ends up with cradle cap. Indiana still has a few patches now so may even try it with her too xx

  7. That’s really speedy! My daughter never had it when younger but got a small bit now which I am really bad for picking off!! This looks a lot more sensible!! xx #maternitymondays

  8. I didn’t think of epiderm, sounds like you can add it to bath water too, that sounds good for dry skin generally. Definitely an interesting post for is. My boy loves his daily bath but you’re right it doesn’t do his skin much good, better now he’s older though. #maternitymondays

    1. It never did with my second child. With my third, a few flakes did return (never as bad as before) so I just repeated the process. He’s 10 months now and no flakes πŸ™‚

  9. Coconut oil really helped my boy he has lots of hair too but hated.the flakes taking some away but it will grow back better
