You wouldn’t think former mining sites would offer much in the way of beauty would you?
Well, where I grew up in Ashton-in-Makerfield, near Wigan, there is a place called Three Sisters which is one of eight ‘flashes’ in the Wigan borough.
The Wigan flashes were formed after the coal was extracted and it let to subsidence and flooding in the area.
If you buy a house in my part of the world, you have to have a mining survey done to check there are no mines under your house for example. It’s just part of our rich, industrial heritage.
When I first moved in with Hubster, we lived in Lowton which was very close to Pennington Flash. Another local beauty spot with a golf course, boat club, park and miles and miles of country walks with much wild life.
We visited Pennington Flash quite a lot when we lived there-taking Rosie the dog to frighten the ducks etc.
So this week, I decided to take Boo to Three Sisters. It was a nice day and we were going to visit my parents.
I am ashamed that it is only half a mile away from my parent’s house and I hardly ever went there when I lived at home
I suppose I was more interested in going out and clothes shopping.
Considering I hadn’t visited in years, I was in for a pleasant surprise.
The views of the lake are just breath taking.
Boo loved feeding the ducks, swans and geese.
She had a lovely time on the playground and then had a good old play in the fallen leaves.
It is free parking at Three Sisters so it is a lovely free activity with children.
I just wish we’d taken Rosie with us.
We had a lovely time at Three Sisters. If you are ever in the Wigan area, I really recommend checking out the flashes we have.
They are really lovely.
