High Legh Miniature Railway at Christmas

This weekend we visited the High Legh miniature railway at High Legh Garden Centre near Lymm, Cheshire.

Boo and I visited a couple of years ago in the summer but I think she was a bit young and I fear I enjoyed it more.

This time was different, at Christmas the railways gets all festive and bell-jingly train rides to Santa’s grotto are the order of the day and I admit it, I was so excited.

We arrived at about 11am and there was a little que. It was £6.50 for Boo and £1.50 each for Hubster and I. The child’s ticket included the grotto experience, visit to Father Christmas and a gift.

From the beginning the staff made the experience special. From the giddy man giving out the tickets to the friendly, funny driver, the excitement built for all of us.

The train ride itself takes about five minutes and goes through a little wooded area. I didn’t really know what to expect at the grotto but we pulled into a fairy-lit station complete with reindeer and we were met by an elf.

The grotto was based around the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

We went into ‘Uncle Andrews’s’ library to build up the excitement and then (my favourite bit) we had to walk through a coat-lined wardrobe to enter Narnia.

As a life-long Narnia fan, I squeaked about always wanting to go through the wardrobe. You can’t take me anywhere.

Once into Narnia, we were told that Aslan was on the move. There was a toy lion, a white witch mannequin and a hoard of little creatures who had been turned to stone.

We then went though to see the big man himself and Boo really enjoyed it. Yes, despite appearances, she was still there with her embarrassing mother.

She got to pick her own gift which all seemed great quality.

We then found ourselves back in the garden centre.

I had such a good time, I contemplated going around again but I thought I would be pushing it with Hubster.

We don’t get many family trips out together and this really was special. Even Hubster looked like he enjoyed it.

We even got a special card with the ticket so that we could visit the miniature railway throughout 2015 for free.

I highly recommend the miniature railway at Christmas. It is good, honest family fun.

*This is not a sponsored post. We visited the miniature railway and garden centre as one of rare family trips out.

  1. This sounds like an amazing grotto. I love Narnia. We’ll definitely be doing more of this sort of thing next year when the tot knows more about Christmas. In the meantime I fear, like you, it would be more for me 🙂
