Learning to crochet one stitch at a time

My Dad’s mum taught me knitting when I was a very little girl. Nana Clancy had the patience of an angel and always picked my stitches up for me.

I knitted hundreds of ‘scarves’ for my toys and I really do owe my love of the needles to her.

I’ve knitted on and off ever since. My most amazing feats being a knitted Nativity, knitted vegetables and Christmas toys.

My tension is not always correct. When I was pregnant with Boo, I knitted a baby hat which fitted Hubster but, like most things, what I lack in success, I make up in enthusiasm.

I am currently knitting a hat for Baby G:

Quite a bit to do with this one

And a scarf for myself:

How gorgeous is this yarn?

There is one area of needle craft though that is letting me down. Crochet.

I have never learnt how but always wanted to.

So recently, the lovely people at my favourite craft shop, Black Sheep Wools, offered me the chance to learn how to crochet with the amazing How to Crochet book by Emma Varnam.

Like my fitness post earlier this week, I am going to keep you updated as to how I’m getting on. I am planning on trying granny squares first, to make a blanket.

I am hoping that the learning to crochet will go hand in hand with the fitness though-after all, you can’t pop shovel Haribo into your mouth with a crochet hook in your hand, can you?

Black Sheep Wools is the largest knitting and needle craft shop in the country and, luckily it is only three miles from where I live.

As well as selling the stuff you need to craft, they also teach you how.

I was given the book, yarn and hook for the purpose of this post but all opinions are my own.

  1. Good luck! I’m the opposite to you. I’m a bit rubbish at knitting (can only just master v basic garter stitch, can’t read a pattern) but I caught myself to crochet 2 years ago & never looked back! It’s a passion. Something I am actually good at! I love it. So keep at it. YouTube will help if you get stuck.

PS Eventually you will master the art of simultaneous Haribo consumption too! 😉

    1. Oh no I’m counting on crochet to aid weight loss. I may be calling on you for advice 🙂
