Moving on

After the chicken carnage, I thought long and hard about what to do. Should I replace them, was it worth the heartbreak?

If it hadn’t been for Hilda’s survival, I think I probably wouldn’t have bothered getting any more but chickens are flock animals and she was sad on her own.

My first two replacements were golden silkies-unsexed and 11 weeks old.

I had already put my name down for four warren ex-battery hens which arrived a few days later.

Then I got two light Sussex, a speckledy and a black rock to start me off. I have a little baking business on the side so I needed eggs for that.

I feel mean but at first, it just wasn’t the same. My other chickens seemed friendlier.

Later, I pulled myself together. It wasn’t the new chicken’s fault what had happened with the fox so we slowly became friends.

Chickens are lovely little creatures and, with time and care, can become friendly and funny.

From the time the silkies escaped from the field, crossed a road and were found on the golf course, to running down the main road after another escapee, life is never dull with chickens.
