New Life, New Lambs and a New Video

 

I love this time of year on the farm. The air is filled with excitement and adrenalin when we are lambing. Expectation and the sounds of newborn lambs bleating fills the air.

If you follow me on social media, you won’t have failed to notice we are lambing.

Since my last post, after reading The Yorkshire Shepherdess book, I have been asking a lot more questions to Hubster-probably annoying him but asking never-the-less.

Yesterday, I had my chance. I wheeled G in his pushchair into the lambing shed and we sat watching a ewe, clearly in labour, contracting.

Most mothers would cross their legs at this. We all know after all what contractions feel like. Hubster came over and when I asked if I could have a go, he passed me a glove.

I wasn’t prepared. I had been having coffee with two mums from school. My hair wasn’t tied back and I wasn’t wearing wellies but I thought this was my chance.

I really feel women have a greater affinity to labouring animals. Men will never understand what it’s like to give birth-plus women generally have smaller hands-always a plus point.

I didn’t get to pull the lamb out. I am not confident enough yet but I literally got down and got my hands dirty and tried.

That is all any of us can do.

Since the video, the sheep went onto have another lamb. Both mother and babies are doing well.

I am so glad I managed to show you how well Hubster and I work together. It is a special relationship we have and I cherish it. You can also hear Baby G in the background of Hubster’s clip. It’s a family affair here, whatever their age.

New life will never cease to amaze me.
