Shared Parental Leave-What it Means for You

The option of Shared Parental Leave came into effect in April and, while many view it as a step in the right direction, I feel it could go further.

Single parents and the self-employed will not benefit from the scheme so I feel more could be done to really help everyone.

The standard maternity leave package is too low. At the moment, people on maternity leave receive £139.58 a week which is taxed and, if you have a company pension, that is taken out too.

While I agree it is better than many countries, more could be done.

If partners want to take advantage of shared parental leave, fair enough but there should be help for people, like me, whose husband is a farmer and unable to take time off.

I propose extended maternity pay for 52 weeks rather than 33 or, at the very least, the 33 week amount could be spread over 52 weeks so you would effectively be getting ‘paid’ for a whole year of being off with your baby.

Surely to raise Statutory Maternity Pay would help more families than sharing parental leave would?

While just one week’s paternal leave sounds like bliss to me, surely my case and the case of many other self-employed and business owners would be helped with an increase in SMP.

Shared parental leave does not help enough people. More money would.
