The Day I Let My Dog Down

If you have ever owned a dog, I do not need to explain to you about that unwavering, unbreakable bond that is shared between canine and human.

They don’t refer to them as man’s (or woman’s) best friend for nothing. I am sure you are aware of my deep, love for my furry friend, Rosie but recently, I feel I let her down.

She was due her booster jab at the vets and her injection coincided with the second lot of jabs for a new puppy the farmer had bought. Having to wrangle the three children, a dog and a puppy at a time of day when a danger nap (basically any sleep after 3pm) would be likely, the farmer suggested we ask our niece to take them.

Thankfully, she did but when I got a call from her saying the vet wanted to speak to me, tears came in my eyes.

Rosie has a heart murmur, said the vet.

She asked if she had any symptoms like lethargy or black outs which thankfully, she didn’t and the vet just told me to keep an eye on her for now.

I felt so guilty though. Rosie has stuck by me through everything. All the good times, all the bad. Her little tail wagging next to me and I wasn’t there for her.

I felt (and still feel) awful. She had been frightened going to the vets. She was shaking-probably due to knowing the things she had experienced there previously like being spayed and other injections.

I feel like I deserted her in her hour of need. The guilt is huge and, she was compensated with quite a few home cooked dinners that week and a thorough brushing.

I have learnt my lesson though. I will not let her down again.

  1. Aww bless her, I am sure if you asked her whether she would rather have you there at the vets or have a few home cooked dinners she’d let her belly decide and go for the dinners! You will be there when it matters.
