The lies we tell our children

I recently read a really funny blog post by Who’s the Mummy, Sally Whittle on the amazing lies parents tell their kids.

There were some hilarious and downright genius retorts to children’s ever inquisitive or outrageous questioning (I wrote some down to use personally), so I decided to look closely at our own home life and my friends, I am no angel in the truth department when it comes to Boo.

These are some of my own personal favourites:

When more TV is begged for at bedtime ‘Peppa Pig has gone to bed’

petrol

When Boo wants to get on her little tikes car just before I want her to go inside: ‘it’s run out of petrol, it won’t work.’

If she won’t go upstairs to bed, I get the Minnie Mouse toy out, put on a dodgy American/Minnie voice and tempt her up the stairs.

chick

I bought her one of those little wire chicks over the Easter period and, as I put my purse away, she wanted another. I said we couldn’t get another because they would fight. Not only did she buy it, the shop assistant looked very impressed.

Rosie

If she won’t eat her meals, I tell her the dog will eat it. To be honest, that’s not much of a lie as given half the chance, Rosie probably would.

I use Peppa Pig as a deal breaker a lot of the time-Peppa wears her boots/brushes her teeth/eats vegetables. Thank goodness for Peppa, I say.

One really mean thing I did was hide the HappyLand toys. They drive me mad. Boo tips them out and refuses to tidy them up. I began hiding them in strategic places around the house but my super-sleuth three year old found them every time. They are now in her wardrobe-how mean am I?

Boo knows that radiators, fires and plug sockets are hot and ‘burn’. I have extended this warning to most electrical items-including my iPhone. I’m not sure she buys it but it’s worth a try.

Anything I don’t want her to have, maybe chocolate, face cream, make-up, that kind of thing, I say oh no that’s only for mummies.

Oh and when she wants sweets at the supermarket, I say oh no they’re not for little girls, you could choke. While this is not a lie in terms of tictacs, I think I am pushing it a bit with Maltesers but I will continue to use it while I can.

So there you go. It seems we are a nation of liars when it comes to our children. Most of it however, is for there own good.

I was talking about it with my mum earlier and, where I grew up there was an orphanage run by nuns known locally as the ‘naughty girls home.’ I do remember be threatened with being sent there and my mum said on one occasion, I packed my bag to go.

If Boo turns out anything like me, I fear for our future.

Do you tell any untruths to your children?

  1. Haha love these! Mine are 7 and nearly 12 so the little white lies don’t work as well anymore but I will try and make a note of any I do tell for a post soon.

  3. Love this haha!, the car running out of petrol is genius!!! We are not quite at that age with Arthur yet but I’m kinda excited to see how creative I can get with my lies!!!

  4. This brilliant, I think we all have our own bag full of these great on liners to get our kids to do or not do something. I know I do all the time. Batteries died on the ipad, mickey mouse eats califlower, my legs are sleeping I can’t move, the list is endless. hahahah Great post. Thank you so much for linking up to Share With Me #sharewithme

  5. Lol I love this Emma 🙂 I think we don’t ever stop with the little white lies we tell our children. My son is now 5 and I still say them to get him to do something. He’s starting to cotton on though – little clever clogs. Not easy when friends or family blow your cover “Oh no it’s not broken Mummy just wants you to go to bed” Nooooo not the B word!!!! xx

    1. Oh no that must be awful haha I think it’s funny seeing how creative I can become with them 🙂
