Dreaming of More Sleep

sleep

Sleep. It’s like the holy grail of parenting. Most of us would like more and are not getting enough.

My two are not too bad but we are a family of early risers. It must be the farmer gene running through them.

It has been 6am for months, years even and I can cope with that. It is a reasonable enough time.

When the clocks went back a few weeks ago, it all changed. I have never been militant about changing. I have known parents who spent weeks before clock changes adjusting their child’s bedtime by a few minutes a night. I couldn’t ever be bothered to do that. To be honest, I never needed to.

The first day we were all up at 5am which I would say is standard for kids who usually get up at 6. Thinking they would eventually adjust, I thought nothing of it.

Winter is usually better for sleeping here. There is no light streaming through the windows at ungodly hours so we have had some 8am lie-ins in the past.

That first week, we were up at between 4am and 5am every day. EVERY DAY. It was a long week. They were long weeks.

The second trimester of pregnancy is supposed to be the time when you are energised. Unfortunately, the early starts have meant the memo about energy is yet to arrive. I have even been grabbing 40 winks myself during G’s nap time. I call it self-preservation. It’s not like I can run on caffeine at the moment.

After a week, I hot footed it to Mothercare and invested in a GroClock in the hope I could train Boo into sleeping longer. At almost six, she knew that she shouldn’t get up until the light was yellow and showed the sun for day time.

It worked. For two days.

As I write this, we have been up since 5.30am. Boo selflessly going in to wake G up too so we are all up (apart from Hubster who bargained for a lie-in with the promise I could have an hour myself later on).

So this year, Santa, all I want for Christmas is my kids to stay in bed until 6am. It’s not a lot to ask. I am currently having visions nightmares that I will be settling a newborn baby in three months time at 4am and only having an hour before the other two are up.

Keep everything crossed.

  1. Thissss!!! The flipping clocks! I know there were reasons for changing them years ago but hey, weren’t they related to farming? If you don’t need them to go back in this day and age, nobody does. I’m pretty certain whoever makes the clocks change these days is just doing it to torture parents. It needs to stop.

  2. We never bother to train the children to the time change either and just carry on at the new times, they don’t tend to really notice! That said we had about 3 weeks of stupidly early starts from Little 3, like 2 whole hours early, but the clocks only changed one hour!
