#Farm24 Telling the World What We Do

Ever wondered what life is like as a farmer (or his wife)?

Then this Thursday, August 8th, 2019 is going to be a treat for you.

The newspaper and community at Farmer’s Guardian is back with its annual #Farm24 which is exactly what it says it is. The opportunity for people to see a live social media feed of farmers up and down the land, letting people know what they get up to in any one day.

It couldn’t come at a more important time with the gap between farm and fork needing to be brought closer together. For the average person working 9-5, when your alarm goes off at 7am for example, a dairy farmer will, more than likely have already been up for four hours.

Likewise, a livestock or arable farmer may well be working way past 5pm and for many, like us, it is seven days a week, 365 days a year-even Christmas Day.

I often compare farming to the priesthood. It is a vocation rather than a job because, if you didn’t love what you did, there would be no way you could put the amount of effort that farmers put in to produce our food.

Before you laugh, yes farmers really are au fait with technology. Most cattle movements-sales, births, deaths etc are carried out online now and, with weather apps and trusty vet, Google, smart phones really are the plough of today. Farmers just have to watch they don’t drop said smart phone into a slurry pit.*

Anyway, I will be taking part in #Farm24 myself on my Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts so, if you don’t follow me, why not?

My day will not be like my husband’s as he is more hands on than me and I look after the children but behind every good farmer is a farmer’s wife they say and, I will try and get out there to show you some animals and what we are up to on the farm.

Likewise though, one day in farming is never the same as the next or the one before so I am really looking forward to seeing how other farmers lives are and what they get up to.

Make sure you search for the hashtag #Farm24 and support us on this special day.

  1. Well, I totally missed this one – bit pants given I’m a farmers wife, but then my OH is not technologically minded at all, and I’ve not noticed it in the Farmer’s Guardian either.

The OH gave up with his smartphone attempt, and now has a RugGear phone – indestructible but horrendous for doing anything other than make calls!

I agree that it’s a vocation though. My OH is up at 5 every morning – for feeding etc, and then back in at dark (or very late if harvesting). I think he’s mad because although it’s a great life for kids, and being outside, there’s also a lot of stress and pressure. But he says even if he won the lottery, he’d just buy a much bigger farm, and become a game keeper alongside the farming. He’s probably not even take a holiday!

    1. Ha ha mine says that too about the lottery win. So funny. We need a farmers wives club 😉
