Our New Puppy

I’ve wanted another dog for ages. I knew that if anything ever happened to Rosie, I would find it very hard to replace her (she is irreplaceable) so I thought I would like a puppy while she is still with us.

My dream was to open a box on Christmas morning and have a beautiful puppy jump out. I was thinking either a Shih Tzu or a black Labrador. Hubster was adamant though that nothing else live was allowed in the house.

I tried everything.

I said it would stop me being so broody for another baby-and even that didn’t work. By New Year’s Eve, I had come to terms with being a one dog family.

Then, last week, Hubster saw an advert for Norfolk Terrier puppies. We already have a Norfolk Terrier dog outside so he said, if there were any bitches, he would think about it.

I rang the number on the advert. He had four bitches, it was like it was meant to be.

I promised Hubster the world for this puppy. No more babies, I would look after it, help toilet train it. The world.

So last Saturday we headed deeper into our county with Baby G in the back (Boo had gone to her Nana’s) and found the house of the puppies.

I was in my element. Cuddling four fluffy puppies all at once, and their mother.

We had said, before we went in we would choose our favourites and then see if they match up. Something of Hubster’s farmerness must have worn off as I knew instantly which one he would pick.

My head also choose that one but there was a ‘could we not have two’ that may have slipped out of my puppy-loving mouth.

There was a pause but he said no to two.

So this little fluffball was paid for and settled onto my knee for the drive home.

We batted names between each other all the way home. I originally wanted to call her Daisy to stick with the flower name with Rosie but my friend has a dog called Daisy and I thought she would think we were copying.

We chose Ruby because, when she is older she will be a gingery red colour and it does provide some cute alliteration with Rosie.

Rosie is nine this year so we did worry she wouldn’t take to the energetic Ruby. They get on brilliantly though and she has fitted in perfectly.

Ruby seems to have a different temperament to the washing line, binman, postman, ratting, cat-hating Rosie. She seems a bit calmer and I have caught them a number of times cuddled up in one bed.

We made the right decision. I think Ruby will give Rosie a new lease of life. Will it make me less broody? Probably not but the puppy is here now-what can Hubster do?

I love dogs and babies. The end.

  1. Oh how exciting. I understand how lovely it is to get a second dog. We adopted Casper our second dog in November and the best thing ever. Good luck and I’m happy for you having 2 lovely dogs now. They make life more joyful! Angela from Daysinbed

    1. Yes. The live outside and are supposed to work. They usually just bark at cats though 😉

  2. Me too!! Love babies and puppies that is ha! Oh Ruby is the cutest little thing and I love how Rosie has taken to her – so sweet! I too dreamed of a black lab puppy for a significant birthday sometime ago and himself said no, then fast forward a couple of years and our eldest asked for one for her birthday, we now have a black lab ha! Daddy’s girls hey! A lovely post xx

    1. Aww that is lovely. I love the energy of terriers but you can’t beat the loyalty of black labs. Yay for getting one 🙂

  3. Awwww, Ruby is gorgeous – but then I am a sucker for hairy terriers (My parents had a Lakeland x Border). I am so glad you got your way and Rosie is happy with the new addition. Our boys would love another dog but after the loss of Poppy and Harry within 7 months of each other I am not sure I am ready just yet. Saari has canine friends who come and stay when their owners are away and we are pushing the fact that the gite welcomes dogs so hopefully she’ll get some pals that way. She doesn’t seem sad to be alone but then who really knows what goes on inside a dog’s head.
Many thanks for introducing Ruby to #AnimalTales 🙂

  4. Hi Emma, I love that last photo of you with the dogs. Ruby trying to get in there whilst Rosie is distracted by the camera, a clever little dog.

I think that that bringing a young dog into the fold does rejuvenate the older dogs. We have four dogs ranging from three years old to twelve and the older dog still has moments of playfulness. Yesterday she was dangling one of the dogs ropes for the little dogs to pull on, it was cute.

I hope Ruby and Rosie live long and happy lives with you.

    xx
