Save Mothercare!!

I think we’ve all become numb to the news of various high street retailers going bust. I suppose Woolworths was one of the first big names in the British retail industry to go and a large number of others have followed.

These big high street names just can’t compete with online shopping and, the ever-encroaching supermarkets.

Now don’t get me wrong, supermarkets have their place and, with a small child, I do a lot of my grocery shopping in them as it is just easier than taking her in and out of the car seat etc. However there are some things, like baby products, which only specialist retailers can do well.

It was the news this week that Mothercare might be the latest casualties that really got me worried.

Mothercare!!

Now I am sure you all know I’m obsessed with anything baby and the thought of this pillar of my baby-retail society being taken away from me makes me want to stamp my foot in a toddler-tantrum fashion.

Where else can you go and get all pregnancy, maternity, baby, toddler, child and toys under one roof?

(Don’t say the supermarket).

I remember my first visit to the Mothercare in Warrington when I had passed my 12 weeks scan when I was pregnant with Boo. It is like a pregnant woman/mother’s dream.

Beautiful things for your little one displayed in an airy atmosphere with helpful, knowlegable staff.

You wouldn’t get that in a supermarket.

I’ve been there discussing the best cot, pram, potty-you name it, my local Mothercare has been on hand to help.

Now I know there are other places to buy baby things that might be cheaper and I know new mums are on a tight budget-especially with the poor maternity pay in this country but could you live without Mothercare? Their quality? Their expertise?

To me it would be a tragedy.

Get behind this icon of our hormone-laced world and support them.

Go and buy some reins or a baby bath. I’m not even pregnant but am considering going buying another pregnancy support pillow in the slim hope that my one 17 purchases (I can’t go in there and buy just one thing), might, just might save them from going under.

If you don’t, you’ll be sorry when they’ve gone…..

  1. When my children were small (many years ago!) there was only Boots and Mothercare for us ordinary people to choose from (the wealthy ones had John Lewis). When each new catalogue came out we devoured them and knew and discussed every new product. We could tell from the colour of another mum’s nappy buckets which year they bought their equipment! I remember those days (and both shops) with great affection.

  2. I remember first going in Mothercare when I was pregnant and it scared the hell out of me. It was full of stuff for babies/kids that I never knew existed and certainly had no idea how to use! After getting over the initial fear it’s been great, and they were so helpful, when we had to choose the next car seat after the baby carrier. We go to the Warrington one too! x

    1. i remember my first visit too i think it is a right of passage 😉 i was doubled over buying pregnancy pillow with bad back. will be sad if it goes as going in a supermarket won’t feel as special 🙁 x

  3. Yep- we need to do everything we can to support our high streets. But, the downside of that is we are sucked into buying absolutely shedloads of things that we don’t need. At all! It’s a toughy! 😉

  4. They are starting to extort people who decide to have children even more out of their money because if MC closes it pushes people to places like Mamas and Papa’s and Kiddicare which are quite expensive xx

  5. I remember my first trip to Mothercare when I was pregnant with Ben – I was completely overwhelmed & had a bit of a meltdown lol
