Growing Our Own-first beginnings…
Do you remember my last gardening post where I was impatient to grow my own? It was way back in February and two months on, it is amazing how things have changed.
Not wanting to bore you when every little shoot that came up (I did do a little dance in the kitchen), I waited until there was some progress.
We’ve had progress.
I’ve grown rocket/watercress (I can’t remember which), purple basil and pumpkins in a little propagator on my kitchen window sill. I have been using the rocket/watercress in egg and salad recipes as it grew but yesterday I got to plant the pumpkins out.
I don’t think growing them in tubs is ideal but I am still having a go. They have a rather large tub to themselves so I’m sure I will get something from them. The photos don’t d the seedlings justice. The middle plants are actually quite big. It’s just they look small in the big tub.
In not remembering whether the plants in the kitchen were rocket or watercress, I learned my first lesson. Always make a note of what you have planted.
So for tub number two, akso known as ‘Lizzi’s Lettuces’ I was clever.
I wrote down on the back of an envelope when I planted the seeds-Bingo! If you follow the line up from each vegetable, that is what has been planted. Loads of people have told me carrots and parsnips are hard to grow but, I had the seeds so, I thought I had to at least try.
However tub three, ‘Betty’s Blooms’ has some herb plants that I bought but then I sprinkled some left over seeds from tub two and didn’t write it down. I know lettuce is in there and, I think parsnips.
I will keep you posted and let you know when we get our first crop.
I’m sure radishes can’t be far off. I don’t think they take long to grow.
We are really enjoying growing our own.
