It is National Stationary Week so I am challenging you to pick up a pen and write a letter.

Here are five reasons why you should.

1.It is personal. In the age of the internet and the smart phone, it seems we have lost the personalisation of letters. From something as simple as writing on an envelope to decorating the envelope with stickers or washi tape. It is not only lovely to send but think of how pleased the recipient will be to receive something through the post that isn’t a bill.

2.Getting a handwritten letter land on the door mat is a lovely surprise. In sending a letter you could really brighten up someone’s day.

3.A letter is much more permanent than an email. It is so easy to delete and email-whether by accident or not. With a letter, you actually have something in your hand. When my grandmother died, we found letters my grandfather had written her. If people stop writing letters, that piece of history would be lost.

4.Writing letters supports handwriting. The way things are going with technology, there may come a time when handwriting becomes obsolete. What a crying shame that would be. Granted, not everyone has beautiful handwriting but, like anything, the more you do it, the better you become. It seems many of us are simply out of practice.

5.Letter writing is romantic. Not in the literal sense, although of course, it can be. As it has become so rare, the actual act of letter writing and receiving is something of a novelty and I think it is romantic.
