Approaching Home Renovation Season

Although living on a farm may have many wonderful benefits such as being able to gaze at a beautiful starry sky and letting the kids enjoy the great outdoors, when it comes to maintaining the home it can provide more than a few issues.

Rather than being built with all of the standard features and sizes of regular houses, farm homes are often thrown together on a fairly haphazard basis. And with farm life being particularly rough and ready, they will undoubtedly need a touch more loving care too!

As we’re approaching the end of the year and the cold winter months, it’s meant that most of us farming households will be making preparations and looking at how we can renovate any particularly troubling areas around the home.

Given that many rooms in houses like ours have a multifunctional aspect of being part-home and part-workplace, they might not be best-suited to some of the more elegant aesthetic touches that you find in most interiors magazines. However, that doesn’t mean that we all have to live in a pig sty, as even the most basic utility room can be given a trendy makeover with just a splash of colour and an inventive use of some fun individual motifs.

Similarly, as many farm houses can be quite sprawling, heating the whole building can be fairly expensive. Whilst it’s fun and cosy to huddle around a nice range, such a heating system can often lead to certain rooms always being chilly. Thankfully, there are many modern innovations from the likes of Verismart who have introduced electric radiators that can isolate any cold spots in the home, and as they aren’t connected to a central heating system, they can be installed just about anywhere.

Whilst thinking about keeping warm, it’s also a good idea to have a quick look around your windows before the snowstorms come. Using a quick decorator’s caulk to cover up any gaps in doors and windows can go an awful long way in making sure that no chilly draughts get into your family home. And while you’re at it, I always like to make a quick inspection of the window frames to make sure that they aren’t rotting, as it’s always best to catch it before it’s too late.

And finally, just in case it all seems like it’s too much of an uphill struggle to fix everything in sight, remember that the upcoming new year is the perfect time to get rid of the old. So don’t get too sentimental about that old and worn-out kitchen dresser, the new year is all about new and exciting beginnings. That’s my aim anyway.
