5 Reasons I Love Being A Farmer’s Wife

I love animals. Always have. If you had told me when I was younger though, that I would be a farmer’s wife, I don’t think I would have believed you.

It is a different way of life, farming. Far different from anything I ever imagined. Not least because unlike other couples, we live together and Hubster works where we live. For us, it just works and, having lived a farming way of life, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

So here are my five favourite things about being a farmer’s wife.

  1. Pets. All the pets. When I was growing up, I would have loved a dog. My Dad is allergic to them so that was out of the question. Here, I can have as many pets as I like. Hubster takes the opinion that if I look after them, I can have what I want. Within reason. Over the years here I have had my fair share of animals. Some are still with us, others not but I am always on the look out for more, obviously.
  1. Cooking. I do moan about doing all of the cooking sometimes but I do love it. Hubster works long hours so he needs something ready when he comes in. I love devising new things. Some well received, others not. I always try and do sweet ‘wifey’ things which he never notices like his breakfast as a smiley face or heart shaped pancakes on Valentine’s Day. A cake always goes down well though.
  1. Neighbours, or not. We don’t have any. Well, we do but they are far enough away for it to feel like we don’t. We can basically do anything and no one will see is-I quite regularly hang washing out in my pyjamas or go and feed the rabbits or lambs with my nightie on and a coat over the top. We can make as much noise as we want without worrying about disturbing someone else. I will never stop appreciating this.
  1. I am never bored. There is always something to do or see. Something to bake, stroke, pet, talk to. If you are bored on a farm, there is something wrong with you. The end.
  1. People find what we do interesting. Years ago, everyone knew a farmer or his wife. We live in a semi-rural community so I do know other farmer’s wives but if I go further afield, and tell people I am a farmer’s wife, they are usually really interested and I love that. If little me manages to ignite a love for British food into someone who isn’t from a farming background, then I feel my job is done.

  1. I think you have a really great life, I know it’s not easy long hours and fighting against weather, livestock issues but in my mind it’s the life I would like to be involved in. Thanks for your blog it’s informative and interesting

  2. Couldn’t help but laugh at the wifey things he doesn’t notice, mine doesn’t either! Even if I change all the furniture he doesn’t notice until he goes to sit down in mid air. Farming on the brain, I say!
