Baby Wearing with a Concscience thanks to Rockin Baby

Baby carriers. They are not something I really thought about with Boo. We lived in a normal house and I was quite happy to push her around in the pram.

Since starting my blog a couple of years ago though, I have become more and more aware of the cult of baby wearing.

With so many styles to choose from and parents using them for a variety of different reasons, I have been thinking about them myself.

Coupled with this, we now live on the farm and, until I find a real off-road pram, baby wearing really is the only option.

Having had a caesarean, I have left it to past the 12 week mark to give my stomach muscles time to heal and struggled through with the pram….

On cobbles, on the unsteady farm yard and in fields.

However, I opted for a Rockin’ Baby ring sling in an outfit flattering brown and my #FarmBaby2015 can now come everywhere with mummy.

I did worry when I opened the box as it really is just a large piece of material with two rings. How on earth did it work?

I had nothing to fear though there are plenty of videos and how-to diagrams online so I did my homework and tried it out.

It really has changed my life. Now we can go for walks across fields and help feed the pet lambs without having to either park the pram somewhere too far away or simply not be able to go which, with an inquisitive four-year-old in tow is simply not an option.

I imagine for many first-time baby wearers there is the fear that you won’t get the sling right and the baby may fall and, I admit that the first time I used my sling, I still kept one hand on the baby.

However, I found a local sling meet where you go along and either borrow a sling to try or take yours along and get shown how to use it.

The lovely lady there showed me a different way of wearing the Rockin’ Baby sling which involved the baby, in effect, sitting on the sling rather than lying in it.

We tried this way at a local carboot sale and, while I think it is good for older babies, I think I prefer the original way to wear the sling for now.

The best thing about Rockin’ Baby slings is that they have a conscience.

For every baby carrier bought, the company donate an orange hero sling to mothers in desperate need in Haiti or Kenya.

The scheme is called ‘Mother to Mother’ and it was started in 2011 because they wanted to make a real difference in the world and with the help of people buying the slings, they really have.

At the beginning of my baby wearing journey, I did think it was a cult and, after wearing Baby G for a good few weeks now, I can see why.

The benefits of having your baby so close are amazing. You can bond, you have your hands free which is especially good if you have other children and they feel secure, like they did in the womb.

For a farmer’s wife though, a sling is just the most amazing invention ever. No rough rides over cobbles. Hands free to tend to animals and other jobs. I’ve even made dinner with baby in the sling. I can’t get enough of it.

If you are new to slings and baby wearing, I would say go to a sling meeting-even if it is just to build your confidence.

Why not give Rockin’ Baby a try? You’re helping other women as well as yourself.

I might even get another for a lamb. Or the dog.

  1. Great post and I’m glad working so well for you! I already know for baby no 2 I will get a sling. Didn’t for my first but I think will just be so much easier!! Will bear this one in mind xxx #maternitymondays xx

  2. I’m still unsure whether I want to try baby wearing or not, I never did with my first and we managed ok. It does look like it makes life a little easier having two free hands though! Love that they help others too xx

  3. I have just purchased a Mei Tai carrier but have yet to wear it out and about yet, I am still getting used to wearing it around the house, I’m hoping it will be useful for when we go on hols though 🙂

    1. I’ve got a Mei tai too but I don’t like the way his legs are in it yet-mostly because he was breech. I think it will be ok when he’s a bit bigger

  4. I have a Rockin Baby sling to try with this baby, I am looking forward to giving it a go! I have always loved my Beco Soleil, which is much more structured, but am always happy to try something new!

  5. I absolutely loved baby wearing. I originally only bought my sling for dog walking because, like you, we don’t live on pram-friendly terrain. I ended up using it all the time though because my little one loved napping close to me. Some days it was the only way I could manage to prepare a meal. I love the sound of the rockin baby sling, just disappointed my baby is now too heavy for me to baby wear.

  6. I can understand why you thought babywearing was a bit of a cult! I love babywearing but still even find some of the conversation surrounding babywearing a bit overwhelming sometimes. I’d not heard of that company but I love the sound of the mother to mother scheme. Nicki x

  7. Third time around and I have finally invested in a baby carrier, I love mine, yet to wear it in the house though but it would be a darn site easier than trying to cook and bounce the rocker with my foot! #maternitymondays
