How To Keep A Farmhouse Clean

I am not the tidiest person you will ever meet. I have always had little piles of stuff dotted around. It used to drive my mum mad when I lived at home.

Now with a large farmhouse and three children, there are times that I struggle. I don’t ever say I am perfect at anything and, if you are on the look out for the perfect Instagram feed, there is no point looking at mine.

I don’t get excited about cleaning or at least I didn’t before I started watching Mrs HinchMrs Hinch on Instagram and I try to religiously follow The Organised Mum Method.

This is real life. A real farm with real mud and dust and straw in everyone’s underwear.

It’s still not perfect but it is much better than it used to be.

Living on a farm is just not like living in an ordinary house. Animals come in and out, we have mud, dust and straw walked regularly through the house so, I thought I would share with you my top tips on how to keep a farmhouse clean.

1. Use a noodle spray mop. You can pick them up between £7 and £12 in places like Home Bargains or B&M. Unless something really dirty happens, I mop the floor properly every other day. He nature of a farm is that I could mop the floor every hour and it would still end up with muddy footprints. Any marks between mopping like massive footprints, dusty paw prints or spillages are quickly swept away with the noodle mop. I just spray and mop. It’s genius. https://farmerswifeandmummy.com/the-5-different-levels-of-farm-mud/

2. I keep a cloth in every room. Small children spill things. I don’t want them living in fear. It is the reason I chose a patterned carpet. The cloth is whipped out to get the hot chocolate/sticky things/stickers off the walls and furniture-usually when they have gone to bed.

3. A door mat and runner. I’m still dreaming of the boot room so, until then, once summer ends, I get a new door mat and, often a runner so that muddy feet can be wiped and it saves my kitchen floor a little.

4. Threaten anyone walking in with muddy boots with divorce/Father Christmas/withdrawal of cooking or all of the above. It never works here but it is worth a try.

5. Place air fresheners, reed diffusers and scented candles strategically where people come into the house. That way, your home will smell nice when people arrive and they might be a little more forgiving about the mess.
